Adventure Awaits: BeaconRise Launches Inclusive Weekend Program

Short Introduction: Exciting things are happening at BeaconRise! We are proud to announce the launch of our Inclusive Adventure Weekends – a new program designed to help participants explore the outdoors, try new activities, and build friendships in a safe, supportive environment. This service update shares how our adventure weekends work, highlights a recent outing’s success, and shows how BeaconRise is bringing Empowerment, fun, and community connection to the people we support.

A New Way to Explore and Connect

BeaconRise’s Inclusive Adventure Weekends program opens the door to unforgettable experiences for participants of all abilities. The idea grew from our commitment to Reliability and Safeguarding – we wanted to create a dependable space where participants could challenge themselves while knowing skilled support is always on hand. Each month, a small group (usually 4-6 participants along with support staff and volunteers) sets off on a weekend adventure. Activities are tailored to be fully accessible and can range from nature walks and camping under the stars, to adaptive sports, museum trips, or even a beach wheelchair race. The focus is on inclusion: whether someone uses a wheelchair, has sensory sensitivities, or needs personal care support, we plan ahead to accommodate their needs. These outings aren’t just about having fun (though there’s plenty of that!) – they’re also about fostering independence and social bonds. By spending a weekend together, participants form friendships and discover strengths they never knew they had. Group adventures like this can help combat social isolation and build confidence in ways that traditional programs often can’t.

Accessible Adventures for All

Our program’s planning team includes therapists and experienced support workers who ensure every activity is accessible. Before each trip, we conduct risk assessments of venues and trails, and make necessary adaptations. For example, on a hiking weekend in the Adelaide Hills, we chose a wheelchair-accessible trail and provided all-terrain wheelchairs for those who needed them. On another outing – a farm stay – sensory-friendly schedules and quiet zones were set up for participants who benefit from structured routines or breaks from noise. This attention to detail reflects our value of Safeguard: adventure is only empowering when everyone feels safe and comfortable. We also uphold Integrity by involving participants in the planning. At pre-trip meetings, individuals voice what activities they’re excited or nervous about, and we adjust plans collaboratively. One participant, Ella, initially feared she couldn’t participate in kayaking due to limited upper body strength. The team arranged a tandem kayak with a support worker and an adaptive seat, and Ella ended up beaming as she glided across the water. By honouring each person’s goals and concerns, BeaconRise ensures the adventures truly belong to the participants. And the benefits go beyond the weekend – these experiences often spark new interests and life skills. Participants return home feeling proud, more independent, and eager to stay active.

Empowerment and Friendship in Action

Since the program’s launch, the response has been heartwarming. Last month, we hosted our very first Adventure Weekend Retreat at a national park. Over two days, participants tried activities like bushwalking, fishing, and evening campfire singalongs. For many, it was the first time away from home in years. Sam, a young man with an acquired brain injury, shared that roasting marshmallows under the stars with new friends was a highlight of his year. “I felt included in everything,” he said. Parents and carers have also noticed positive changes. One mother reported that after attending an adventure weekend, her daughter “seems more confident and talks nonstop about her new friends and the giant kangaroo she fed.” These outcomes reinforce why BeaconRise started this program – to provide not just recreational outings, but life-changing opportunities. Research shows that outdoor recreation offers significant mental and social benefits for people with disability, from stress relief to improved self-esteem. Seeing our participants return from a weekend glowing with happiness and pride is proof of those benefits. BeaconRise remains committed to Reliability, continuing these weekends regularly so participants know they have something to look forward to. With each adventure, we witness empowerment in action: participants discovering their capabilities, forming genuine friendships, and feeling more connected to the world around them. Stay tuned for our next Inclusive Adventure Weekend – we can’t wait to share more stories from the great outdoors!
